Metalworking and other process fluids
Aqueous Metal Working Fluids (MWF) used to cool rolling and machining operations contain chemicals and oils, which lubricate the operation, improve surface finish and protect the manufactured product from corrosion. Unfortunately, these components can also become nutrients for contaminating microorganisms. Very substantial slimy growth can occur, often accompanied by foul smells, low product quality and corrosion of the product and the machine tool. There is evidence that there is sometimes a health risk if an aerosol is inhaled.
Most MWF contain passive or active anti-microbial chemicals, biocides, but the effective life of these may vary from a few days to several weeks and they then have to be ‘topped up’.
